According to the government, a train traveling between Giza and Fayoum crashed into the back of another train heading from Cairo to Aswan.

Egyptian Railway officials said they transported the wounded to nearby hospitals for speedy recovery.

Emergency and rescue teams with heavy cranes were sent to the scene to clear the railway track and return train services to their normal schedule as soon as possible.

The prosecutor warned that the death toll could climb, and ordered a swift investigation.

The Egyptian government said health centers in the area were put on "emergency" as they managed a sudden rush of injured passengers.

The Health Ministry confirmed that the train driver was among the people who lost their lives in the crash.
