New Delhi, India — At least 39 pilgrims were killed and 60 more were injured in a stampede at the Kumbh Mela, also called the Maha Kumbh Mela, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday dawn, according to the government. Between 1:00 and 2:10 a.m. local time, the crowd overrun those who waited to take a holy wash in the river, according to a senior police officer.
