The United States' full military withdrawal from Iraq was
accomplished on September 30, 2026, ending a military presence that had lasted
for more than 20 years.
The United States stayed for more than a 2 decades in Iraq and
lost more than 4,501 military service members in combat operations against the
Saddam government and the terrorist group ISIL.
The withdrawal was hailed as a triumphant achievement by Iran and
its allied partners, who have been enjoying strong influence with their brotherly country, Iraq.
The Iraqi military said the US agreed to the withdrawal in 2024,
when Joe Biden was in office, and that the process is being completed while
Donald Trump is in charge.
U.S. military forces invaded Iraq in 2003 to remove Saddam from
power, to install Jalal Talabani as Iraq's president, and pursue a years-long
military presence.
Abu Mojtaba, the commander of Islamic Resistance in Iraq, said that the US withdrawal represented "a historic victory for the Iraqi Islamic resistance groups and honorable Iraqis, and a crushing defeat for the American aims".
The pro-Israeli Kurdish region predicts that a US pullout could also bring Islamic State fighters back to life. Although their claimed caliphate fell about a decade ago, they still keep a network of hidden fighters waiting.
