Violence at a prison in western Sri Lanka claimed 26 inmates' lives, including 7 guards, and left over 100 others injured
Police Officials reported on Monday that the
lethal prison riot claimed 26 lives, including four guards, and caused
injuries to more than 100 people.
As per authorities, the injured from
nocturnal disputes between two drug gangs' prisoners were sent to the Negombo
hospital.
The hospital's chief acknowledged that more
than 100 injured prisoners and guards were hospitalized, and that 26 dead
bodies were taken to the government hospital.
According to officials, a conflict between
prisoners on Sunday night at Negombo jail, which houses about 10,000 inmates.
Large crowds of detainee relatives gathered outside the prison on
Monday.
Without revealing the names, authorities
claimed 7 prison guards were killed while attempting to quell the rioting.
