General Raheel Shareef is one of the most professional, decent, honest,
patriotic, audacious, and graceful generals of Pakistan I have ever heard or
seen throughout my life. The traits that make him unique from others are his
professional commitments and his decision-making power, therefore he will be
remembered for a long time. When he was appointed as a Chief of Army Staff
of Pakistan on 29 November 2013, Pakistan was suffering from myriad problems. Being a veteran commander he decided to eradicate all problems
specifically mother of all problems terrorism first. Without eliminating
terrorism financial and social development is impossible, therefore, he started a mission against terrorists and named it Zarb E Azab which was officially
initiated by Pakistan Army on 15th June 2014 and it has been a very successful
operation so far. Pakistan has been the target of many terrorist
organizations for a decade, different militant groups emerged during America’s
War with Afghanistan. Pakistan, being an ally of America in the war has to face
different challenges from inside and outside of the country. Waziristan and KPK
being near the Afghan border had to face several attacks from different
militant groups. The different militant groups that are fighting against the Pakistan
armed forces are Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Islamic Movement of
Uzbekistan (IMU), Jundallah, al-Qaeda, Haqqani network, the East Turkestan
Islamic Movement (ETIM), and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. The anti-terrorist operation was started after a terrorist attack on Jinnah International Airport
in Karachi. TTP took responsibility for the attack. The preparation of this
operation was very tough as the military had to fight on three different
fronts. The operation is still an ongoing stage and more than 90% of the
land is cleared from the terrorists. Zarb e Azb; being the largest
military operation in the Waziristan area has found support from different
entities from inside and outside of the country. The main purpose of this
operation is to bring peace to the northern areas of the country. Zarb e Azb
has got admiration from leading journalists, analysts, and all major political
parties of Pakistan. Only Jammat-e-Islami political party has publicly
criticized the operation saying that there should be no operation in North
Waziristan and all matters should be resolved via peace talks with the Taliban.
On the contrary; all the major Islamic ulemas of the country have supported
this operation and called it Jihad. Pakistan has also got international
support from many different countries such as America and China. The foreign
minister of China endorsed this operation and said that Pakistan and China face
a similar problem of terrorism and also added that Pakistan will get all the
tactical support from its neighboring country. Pakistan; being a strategic
partner of the United States of America has got sheer support from their
side. Karachi Operation was launched in September 2013. The N-League government made the decision after consulting with C.M Sindh Syed Qaim Ali and
Governor Sindh Dr: Ishratul Ibadafter agreeing with all Sides special powers
were assigned to Sindh Rangers to curb the turmoil and terrorism in Karachi.
Sindh Rangers have claimed that ever since we have started the operation “we
have handed over 6,361 people involved in nefarious activities to police and
221 to FIA and other law enforcement agencies,” officials of the Rangers more
said. “We have also arrested 403 extortionists and 143 kidnappers during the
last three years.”The crime rate has declined in Karachi by at least 60
percent, a top police official announced as the metropolitan marked three years
since an operation was launched to purge it of miscreants. Chief Minister
Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has also said on 23rd November 2016 that,” the Karachi operation has produced desired results, today national and international
Organizations are coming to Karachi for investment and in exhibitions.” More he
said while talking to the media that,” people exhausted from terrorism and some
menaces have breathed a sigh of relief.”Even though the Karachi operation was
launched a few months before the appointment of General Raheel Shareef as chief
of Army Staff, but he made it more effective and successful by establishing
military courts. He emphasized the federal government for military courts after
the gruesome massacre of Army Public School Peshawar on 16 December 2014 which
claimed the lives of 141 including 132 schoolchildren. After the tragedy,
General Raheel Shareef was very saddened and advised the government to
establish Military courts for speedy trials of terrorists and culprits. Finally, on 6th January 2015 parliament passed the bill which allowed them to establish
military courts. As military courts have started showing magnificent results,
and the crime rate has significantly declined to almost 70% .on 25th August
2015 COAS gave the green signal for more military courts and approved 65
million rupees for Karachi police to enhance their capabilities. Reasons
why should he be criticized? General Haroon Aslam was the most senior
general in a row after the retirement of general Pervez Ashraf Kayani When
Nawaz Sharif Prime Minister of Pakistan had made the decision, media was a bit
surprised over his decision as Raheel Sharif wasn’t the most senior one and
Nawaz Sharif repeatedly said that he would make the senior-most general as
chief of army staff, but he did not when the time came. There are 4 main
reasons that was why Raheel Sharif selected as COAS of Pakistan.
1. His family background is apolitical and purely military based
on two Nishan-e-Haider holders in his family.2. He is from Lahore3. His father
Major Sharif and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's father Mian Sharif were
friends.4. He has a very close relationship with PML-N leader Major General (r)
Abdul Qadir Baloch. Baloch once said that he trusted Raheel more than his
children when Raheel was a staff officer of Baloch as corp commander Quetta.2)
Mr: Tahirul Qadri Wants COAS to fulfill Justice PromiseModel Town MassacreOn
June 16, 2014, when the hundreds of police officials laid a siege to the
central secretariat of MQI and the residence of PAT chief Muhammad
Tahir-ul-Qadri. The police launched this operation suddenly without any prior
notice presumably in the name of removing security barriers. The police
operation was continued for 15 hours, in which 14 innocent members of
Minha-Jul-Quran were killed 90 others were injured in direct police
firing. After the long procrastination judicial commission was formed to
find out the main accused of the tragedy. The commission comprising Justice Baqir
Ali Najafi of the Lahore High Court had held the Punjab government “directly
responsible” for the bloodbath at Minhajul Quran Secretariat in Model Town.
Therefore Arif Nizami had said the report has been suppressed. Shahbaz
Sharif along with Chaudhry Nisar Ali conducted several meetings with COAS
during those days because the immense pressure was developed by PTI. Another five-member JIT was formed, headed by CCPO Quetta Abdul
Razzaq Cheema including Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), Intelligence Bureau
(IB). That JIT granted clean chit to CM Shahbaz Sharief. ISI directly
works under the Chief of Army Staff. On 29 August 2014 during the Azadi Dharna
COAS held separate meetings with Imran and Qadri ISPR posted a tweet in which
Gen Asim Bajwa mentioned that COAS was asked by the GOVT to play facilitative
for resolution of the current impasse, in yesterday's meeting, at PM
house. In a meeting during the Dharna COAS promised Qadri
that accountable for the model town massacre would be brought to
justice.” Qadri Sahab claimed.3) Azadi March or DharnaIt was a public protest
march, began on 14 August 2014 to 17 December 2014. Dharna was started
because of the lack of government initiative in the opening investigation into
allegations of electoral fraud, Khan gave the PML-N government a month to
fulfill his demands. He said that he had "knocked every door to find
justice" but in vain.PAT chief Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri was also
accompanied by him, along with his followers as he was also seeking justice for
the victims of model town. On 31 August 2014 suddenly clashes erupted
between police and protesters when dissenters tried to take control of
government buildings. In clashes, 3 complainers were killed and over 700 were
hospitalized, an army was deployed in Islamabad to control the turmoil
situation. The government got it done through the army. It was believed by
the victims of the Model town tragedy that the involvement of the army kept
justice away from us. PTI was also upset about the army’s deployment in
Islamabad during dharna. Army’s deployment only benefitted Government.
Eventually, the dharna was called off by Khan on 17 December 2014 to avoid more
bloodshed. When all is said and done, the chief of army staff (COAS) Mr:
General Sharif Sharief is a graceful and highly balanced personality, ever known to
the people of Pakistan.
