Philippines Earthquake: Dozens Died After Quake Shook southern Philippines

Manila, Philippines — Local journalists reported on Monday that a magnitude-7.8 earthquake near Mindanao island in the southern Philippines has led to the death of as many as 35 people.

In the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake that struck at 07:37 local time on Monday (23:37 GMT on Sunday), tsunami alerts were disseminated across the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia.

At least 134 people have been injured, according to Philippine authorities, and about 10,000 families have had to relocate.

Videos and images of collapsing buildings were shared on social media, showing massive structures reduced to rubble, with landslides reported in several locations.

The government had earlier reported 32 deaths and 12 missing people.

The authorities did not release any further information about the deceased at that time.

The bodies were being moved to a local hospital to be given to their family members. Mindanao comprises the large island of Mindanao and many smaller islands in the southern Philippines.

The Philippine Eagle Centre and Davao Crocodile Park, located in Davao, the biggest city, showcase the area's biodiversity.
