ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Mehmood Khan Achakzai, the head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), is on way to becoming the opposition's leader in the National Assembly after being nominated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
This nomination follows the initiative by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to appoint opposition leaders.
The position has been vacant since August 2025, following the disqualification of Omar Ayub Khan.
A PTI delegation filed Achakzai's nomination, which was supported by opposition MPs. Achakzai, who also leads the opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayin-e-Pakistan (TTAP), enjoys widespread support.
The timely appointment is regarded as critical for carrying out constitutional tasks.
Gohar Ali Khan, chairman of the PTI, acknowledged Achakzai's candidacy and expressed confidence that he will be appointed by Thursday.
Last year, PTI founder Imran Khan backed Achakzai. Although the speaker said the issue was pending, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) administration has been implicated in the postponements.
In compliance with parliamentary rules, suggestions for the opposition leader were sought by Tuesday.
