Analena Baerbock, Minister of Foreign Affairs, begins her first visit to Pakistan. One of the main topics of discussion is the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan: DW
Islamabad - On Tuesday, German Foreign Minister Analena Baerbock arrived in Islamabad to begin a two-day visit to Pakistan.
The legislator from the Green Party met with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to discuss collaboration and regional issues including the situation in Afghanistan.
"We discussed ways to strengthen our current cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, climate change, defense, and human interaction," Bhutto Zardari said at a joint press conference, adding that they intended to open a consulate general in Munich.
According to Pakistan's foreign minister, the "difficult humanitarian situation" of the 40 million Afghans has been discussed in depth.
Bhutto Zardari also stated that "the world's attention and resources are presently concentrated on the Ukraine problem.". "It's vital that the Afghan people gain international attention."
Baerbock said that the discussion on Tuesday took place amid "several crises" and that the Taliban "brought horrible misery and hunger to the Afghan people," emphasizing that the issue had implications well beyond Afghanistan's borders, with Pakistan bearing the brunt of the effects.
The ban on grain exports and the blockade of Ukrainian ports by Russia "has led to a rise in food prices," the German foreign minister said, referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
This is spoken against the context of Pakistan's reliance on grain imports from Russia and Ukraine. She emphasized the importance of working together to solve this problem.
"The international community must stand unified and say loud and clear to the Taliban: 'You are moving in the wrong way,'" Germany's top ambassador said during her maiden visit to Pakistan.
